Even though our knowledge of nutrition has increased and we have access to a wider range of foods eating well has become harder. We have such busy lifestyles and less time to cook at home. We rely more and more on takeaway meals and a snack grabbed at the petrol station to keep us going. Many of the packaged meals and snacks that we are encouraged through advertising to use have little or no nutritional value. Remember every cell of who you are comes from what you eat.

Our current way of eating has;

  • Too many empty calories - resulting in weight gain.
  • Too much sugar, fat and salt.
  • Too few fruits and vegetables.
  • Not enough fibre.
  • Insufficient vitamins, minerals and antioxidants essential for health.
  • Increased incidence of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers.

We are overfed but malnourished in a land of plenty!

If you want to live a full and healthy life you have to fuel your body with all the goodies it needs to thrive.
Get reacquainted with real food – start by using fruit as a snack, top meals up with extra veggies and a salad (Frozen veggies and pre bagged salad is fine).
The more you eat them the more you will like them - I promise!

Drink water to stay hydrated, help to lubricate joints, prevent kidney stones, to stay alert and headache free.
Focus on the healthy fats found in salmon, sardines, tuna, nuts and seeds, olive oils and avocado. Use in moderation and savour the flavour.

Eat grainy breads, brown rice, oats, whole wheat pasta, kumara, pumpkin.
Experiment with lentils and beans and different grains like quinoa.
Even baked beans on toast are good for you!

Reduce butter, pastry, cakes and biscuits these are treat foods not for every day fuel.
Pies, fatty sausages and deli meat, hot chips, chippies have little nutritional value and are definitely ‘sometimes’ foods not for every day – remember you are what you eat!
Limit lollies, sugary soft drinks and Ice cream.

There are awesome tasting alternatives that will satisfy you and nourish your body at the same time.
