Franklin’s new ‘Jewel in the Crown’
Angela Bogaart and her team are passionate about hair. What’s more, she and her mum Pam are passionate about the crucial difference they are able to make in the lives of cancer patients – through their innovative Wig Room at their brand new shop in King Street, Pukekohe.
Shifting to spacious new premises has given Bogaarts a whole new look, with the Styling Lounge, Shampoo Shop and Wig Room placed to beautifully complement each other. Angela is enthusiastic about the new location for her business and customers are too, as people call in to see the bright, well planned interior and to ask the trained staff for hair advice. Having all three aspects of total hair care now under one roof has created a dynamic, welcoming space. “They all complement each other so well,” Angela says.
The Wig Room has two private consultation rooms, one large enough for cancer patients to share with their support person to try on top quality, high fashion wigs.
“I have been a hair stylist for 27 years now, and get a lot of pleasure out of styling wigs for cancer patients. Receiving a wig that is just the right style and colour is part of the healing process for women and for us, it’s deeply satisfying. We opened the Wig Room initially because there was nowhere in our area for women to receive this service. They had to travel to Auckland city. There was nothing like it between Auckland and Hamilton.”
The Wig Room operates as part of the Sweet Louise Foundation. Patients can register for subsidies, under the Ministry of Health’s Healthpac. Sweet Louise is also supported by businesses, who donate to give members free services.
Angela says the clientele come from all walks of life, wanting wigs for personal reasons, health reasons, lifestyle and fashion. Wedding and ball seasons are very busy times for hair extensions and hair pieces. The stylists are confident and expert about placing and styling them and also use wigs as a visual tool when style or colour matching - as part of a thorough consultation. Hats, turbans and hair accessories continue to be popular items in the Wig Room. “Hair is all about having fun!”
The new shop is the jewel in the crown for Angela, who started her career in Pukekohe as a mobile hairdresser before doing her big OE, working as a hair stylist in Canada and Sydney. She opened her own salon in Pukekohe 14 years ago and it has grown from there. Shampoo Shop opened four years ago and is also unique to Pukekohe. It is Franklin’s largest stockist of top professional salon brands of hair care, accessories and appliances.
Angela is a self confessed “avid supporter” of Pukekohe: “We want to keep people shopping in Pukekohe and achieve that by offering products and services right here. People don’t have to go to the city to receive professional, helpful advice or to find the product they want. All the best is here! Our colourists use the Goldwell range, Australia’s number one product and are highly trained in the latest hair fashion trends.”
The staff at Bogaarts is committed to supporting the local community through charity work, getting behind fundraising for community groups, like Well Women, a support group for women suffering from Post Natal Depression.
In the summer months, Angela hangs out with her family at the Fram Dragway at Meremere.
“There’s no airs and graces there, no makeup, just the noise and the smell of burning rubber. Dragway racing is a big part of family life – my husband Gary races and manages the track and my son Nic, who is eight, is a Junior Dragster. Chrissie is six, and she likes another form of horsepower – horses! I’m the support team for the family.”
The shop will start hosting evening events and workshops, from demos on hair care and hairstyling tips to new service/product launches, with a wig/extension expo in the pipeline.
