Arborist Christmas Tree Tips!

Arborist Christmas Tree Tips!

If you have chosen to get a real tree this year there are a number of things you can do to keep it looking fresh and green throughout the whole Christmas season.

It goes without saying to pick one that is looking perky to start with! Any number of places pop up in our area selling trees, and there are also places that you can cut your own. The folks at Mt Gabriel www.christmastrees.co.nz are always supplying quality trees and happy to assist with safe tree felling. Pick a good even shape, not too tall and one with plenty of bushiness.

Once you get your tree home, it is important to prepare the area where you are going to leave it. Make sure you cover the ground suitably to prepare against water damage. If it is a tall tree or you are worried about small children or animals pulling it over, invest in a stand that you can attach to plywood or similar.

There are lot of commercial stands that are available that provide safe and creative enhancements for your tree. You can spend a lot or a little depending on your budget. One of the most successful stands we have found is the simple $1 bucket filled with stones, topped up with water (after putting the tree in) and wrapped with tinfoil! Inexpensive, effective and Christmassy.

Make sure you regularly water your tree, they are after all similar to a cut flower and to maximise their colour and health they need regular top ups of water. Be aware that placing them near windows where the sun streams in, or next to heat omitting appliances like Televisions can all influence the amount of water they need and dry their pines out quicker.

Always keep the water level above the trunk level, if it drops below the end of the trunk, it can seal and be unable to absorb water. If this happens you will need to cut the trunk again. Just like you do with cut roses.

Finally, when all the festivities are over, recycle your tree, use it in your own garden for mulch or take up the services of those who will do it for you.

Following the above tips will enable you to enjoy your real tree for up to 5-6 weeks, because I for one love the smell of a real tree and the fun it brings with the family throughout the holiday period.

On that note, a big thank you to all Tree Magic clients and elocal readers this year, may your holidays be filled with happiness and festive cheer. Look forward to writing for you all in the new year!
