Rats, mice, flies, cockroaches, borer, ants, possums, fleas, wasps - "If it is legal we'll kill it!" Registered pest control technician. Trade certificate Food Hygiene, Dairy Board Microbiology, Quality Control and Quality Assurance. PMANZ Member.
Tony Walker has operated his one man business Walker Pest Control in Paerata for more than 20 years. It was chance really that got him in to this field of work. As he was working for a New Zealand Dairy Company they landed a big overseas contract that required a pest control program. Tony already held a Trade Certificate in Food Hygiene so the company put him through the necessary courses and training to be in charge of the program – and the rest is history.
Along with a lot of seasonal work for the domestic market, such as rodents & ants in winter and flies & spiders in summer, Tony holds many commercial contracts for preventative maintenance work.
All chemicals used have to be bio degradable and break down within a certain time. Tony has always had a keen interest for organic pest control and says there have been some interesting developments in that area lately.
Pest Control is an ever changing field and Tony attends up to 10 training days on Pest Management a year. “Research advances very fast and I spend a lot of time browsing the web pages of research institutes and universities for new discoveries and improved products. The problem is only going to get worse due to climate change.
