Former CIA Official Arrested After FBI Raids Home, Uncovers $40 Million in Gold Bars

A former senior U.S. intelligence official with top secret security clearance has been arrested after the FBI raided his Virginia home and allegedly uncovered a fortune that included roughly $40 million in gold bars, $2 million in cash, and dozens of luxury watches.

Federal authorities say David J. Rush, who reportedly held a senior position at the CIA until recently, orchestrated a massive fraud scheme while falsely portraying himself as a decorated military officer and elite test pilot.

The allegations have raised questions about how a man accused of fabricating major portions of his background was able to obtain high-level government access and maintain sensitive security clearances.

FBI Discovers Massive Gold Hoard During Raid

Rush was arrested on May 19 and now faces federal charges for theft of public money after investigators accused him of swindling the federal government out of tens of millions of dollars.

According to an unsealed FBI affidavit and criminal complaint, the investigation intensified after Rush allegedly requested “a significant quantity of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bars” from his agency between November 2025 and March 2026.

Rush reportedly claimed the assets were needed for “work-related expenses.”

But when FBI agents searched his Virginia home on May 18, investigators allegedly discovered approximately 303 one-kilogram gold bars, $2 million in U.S. currency, and 35 luxury watches, including numerous Rolexes.

The cache immediately triggered deeper scrutiny into Rush’s finances, employment history, and credentials.

Investigators Say Rush Fabricated Military Career

Federal investigators allege that despite holding Senior Executive Service status and Top Secret/SCI clearance, Rush repeatedly lied about his military background in order to secure prestigious positions and higher compensation inside the federal government.

According to court filings, Rush claimed in applications that he graduated from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and served as the “current director of test for a 145-person, 18-aircraft joint Army/Navy weapons test organization.”

Investigators say those claims were completely false.

Military records reportedly showed that Rush was never a pilot and did not possess any FAA licenses.

Instead, authorities said his actual military duties involved work as an information systems technician.

The FBI also alleges that Rush fabricated academic credentials, falsely claiming to hold degrees from Clemson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

According to court documents, registrars at both universities confirmed they had no record of him ever attending either institution.

Government Says Rush Collected Fraudulent Military Benefits

Investigators further accused Rush of improperly collecting military leave benefits for years after leaving active reserve service.

According to the complaint, Rush allegedly obtained approximately $77,000 in fraudulent paid military leave by falsely telling his employer he remained an active Navy Reserve captain through September 2025.

Court records state that Rush had actually been honorably discharged roughly a decade earlier, in February 2015, and had only attained the rank of lieutenant.

The allegations have intensified concerns about oversight failures inside federal agencies responsible for reviewing personnel backgrounds and maintaining security clearance integrity.

Judge Orders Rush Held in Federal Custody

Rush is currently being held in federal custody by the U.S. Marshals Service after a judge denied his request for release.

He has since waived his right to a preliminary hearing, and a magistrate judge determined there is sufficient probable cause for the case to proceed to a grand jury.

The allegations surrounding the former intelligence official are likely to fuel additional scrutiny over internal vetting procedures within the federal government, particularly for employees granted access to highly classified national security information.

With investigators now examining the full scope of the alleged fraud scheme, the case could become one of the most significant security and oversight failures to emerge from the federal bureaucracy in recent years.
