A missing former employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory was reportedly involved in discussions surrounding advanced quantum research before disappearing under unexplained circumstances, according to newly released police records obtained by journalist Lauren Conlin.
Anthony Chavez, 78, vanished from his Los Alamos, New Mexico, home on 4 May 2025. According to police records, he left behind his newly purchased vehicle, keys, wallet, cigarettes and identification, while friends said he did not own a mobile phone, leaving investigators with few ways to trace his movements.
Police Records Raise New Questions
According to the police report, a friend told investigators Chavez had been collaborating with an unnamed Los Alamos scientist on research exploring the possibility of matter existing "in two places at once."
The concept relates to quantum superposition, one of the fundamental principles underlying quantum computing and quantum teleportation research. Exactly how Chavez was involved remains unclear.
Los Alamos Connection
Although Chavez worked primarily as an HVAC technician before retiring in 2017, the report notes that advanced quantum computing facilities depend upon sophisticated cryogenic cooling systems capable of maintaining temperatures approaching absolute zero.
