Scientists tracking space debris believe a discarded four-ton Falcon 9 upper stage crashed into the Moon on Wednesday after spending more than a year in deep space. Researchers had predicted the impact would occur near the Einstein Crater at approximately 8,700 kilometres per hour, producing a fresh impact crater on the lunar surface.
The collision was expected at around 06:35 GMT, although official confirmation was still pending at the time of publication. Astronomers hoped to observe a flash and plume of lunar dust from Earth, but no confirmed visual observation was immediately reported. Scientists instead expect spacecraft already orbiting the Moon to provide evidence of the impact in the coming days.
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea's Danuri lunar probe are expected to photograph the impact site once their orbital paths allow them to pass overhead. Researchers say analysing the new crater could improve understanding of impact physics and lunar surface geology.
The rocket stage originated from a January 2025 Falcon 9 launch that carried the Blue Ghost and Resilience lunar landers toward the Moon. While the reusable first-stage booster successfully returned to Earth, the expendable second stage remained in space after completing its mission. According to SpaceX, the stage was originally placed on what was considered a safe disposal trajectory, but long-term gravitational effects and solar activity gradually altered its course until it intersected with the Moon.
NASA said the impact posed no danger to Earth, and researchers believe it will provide valuable scientific data. By studying the crater and any associated dust plume, scientists hope to refine techniques for locating impact sites and improve understanding of how artificial objects interact with the lunar environment.
Experts also say the incident highlights an emerging challenge as activity beyond Earth increases. While the Moon is frequently struck by natural meteoroids, impacts involving human-made objects remain relatively uncommon. Researchers warn that as more spacecraft, satellites and eventually permanent infrastructure are established around the Moon, managing orbital debris will become increasingly important.
