The Hunter Biden laptop story became one of the most controversial media episodes of the 2020 US election, initially dismissed by numerous media outlets and former intelligence officials as possible Russian disinformation. Tucker Carlson has now added another dimension, alleging that people connected to Benjamin Netanyahu approached him directly with material from the laptop before the election.

US journalist Tucker Carlson says people connected to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approached him with information from Hunter Biden's laptop in the weeks leading up to the 2020 US presidential election.
Speaking with RT journalist Rick Sanchez, Carlson recalled that he was working at Fox News at the time and sent one of his producers to meet a person he described as being connected to Netanyahu.
"People connected to Netanyahu came to us," Carlson said, according to RT, claiming they possessed information from the laptop.
Carlson went further, telling Sanchez that "it was the Israelis who were pushing that" and saying that they had contacted him directly.
The claim is significant, but an important distinction needs to be made: Carlson is describing what he says happened to him personally. The RT report does not provide independent documentary evidence establishing who the individuals were, whether they were acting on behalf of Netanyahu or the Israeli government, or how they obtained the material.
Where Did the Laptop Material Come From?
Carlson told Sanchez he believed material from Hunter Biden's laptop was circulating before the computer was reportedly abandoned at a Delaware repair shop.
He suggested somebody may have obtained the information through cloud storage, but said he did not know who originally acquired it.
Carlson acknowledged that some people had suggested Russian security services may have obtained the material, but made clear that he did not know whether that was true.
He then suggested Netanyahu did not want Joe Biden to win the 2020 presidential election, pointing to the Israeli leader's close relationship with Donald Trump. Carlson characterised what he says occurred as Israeli interference in American politics.
That remains Carlson's allegation rather than an independently established finding.
The Laptop Story That Was Suppressed
The broader Hunter Biden laptop controversy erupted publicly in October 2020 when the New York Post published emails and other material obtained from a copy of a hard drive associated with Hunter Biden.
The material raised questions about Hunter Biden's overseas business relationships and whether members of the Biden family benefited from influence connected to Joe Biden's political position.
With the presidential election only weeks away, the story quickly became politically explosive.
Much of the mainstream US media initially treated the material with considerable scepticism. A letter signed by 51 former US intelligence officials said the episode had what they described as the "classic earmarks" of a Russian information operation.
Importantly, the letter did not establish that the laptop was Russian disinformation.
Social media companies also restricted circulation of the New York Post reporting, while several major news organisations questioned or declined to pursue the story.
Authentication Came Later
The controversy changed substantially after the election.
Significant portions of the laptop data were subsequently authenticated by major American news organisations, including the New York Times and Washington Post.
That did not establish that every allegation made about Hunter Biden, Joe Biden or their business relationships was true. But it did undermine the early impression that the underlying laptop material could simply be dismissed as fabricated Russian disinformation.
This distinction remains important.
There are effectively two separate questions: whether significant material attributed to Hunter Biden was authentic, and what that material ultimately proved about Joe Biden or other members of the Biden family.
The first question became considerably clearer as news organisations authenticated portions of the data. The second has remained the subject of political investigations and dispute.
Carlson's Claim Raises a Different Question
Carlson's new account shifts attention away from whether the laptop existed and toward another question: who possessed copies of its contents before the story became public, and why?
If people genuinely connected to Netanyahu were circulating Hunter Biden material in an attempt to influence American journalists before the election, that would raise obvious questions about foreign involvement in US electoral politics.
But establishing that would require more than Carlson's testimony.
The identity of the people who approached him, their relationship with Netanyahu, the provenance of the material they possessed and whether anyone directed them to distribute it would all need independent verification.

Does This Affect New Zealand?
There is a broader lesson here for New Zealand that extends beyond Hunter Biden, Donald Trump or Israel.
The episode demonstrates the extraordinary power exercised by intelligence officials, major media organisations and technology platforms when deciding what information the public is permitted to see during an election.
Foreign interference should be investigated regardless of where it originates. Claims involving Russia, China, Israel, the United States or any other country should ultimately be judged by the same evidential standard.
Just as importantly, journalists should be cautious about allowing claims made by intelligence officials, governments or political campaigns to become substitutes for independent investigation.
The Hunter Biden laptop controversy remains a useful case study in why journalism should establish the evidence first — and allow the public to make up its own mind.
