The Government has unveiled a new $51 million programme designed to accelerate the rollout of methane-reduction technology across New Zealand farms, signalling a major commitment to technology-led emissions reduction rather than taxation.
Announced at Fieldays in Hamilton, the Early Adoption Accelerator will provide dollar-for-dollar funding to help move methane-reducing technologies from the development stage into widespread commercial use. The programme will be administered through AgriZeroNZ, the government-industry partnership already leading investment into agricultural emissions technologies.
Turning Research Into Real-World Results
The latest investment builds on the Government's existing $80 million commitment through AgriZeroNZ to develop technologies aimed at reducing methane emissions from livestock farming.
Rather than funding individual farmers directly, the accelerator programme will support companies and industry groups capable of rolling out new technologies across large parts of the sector.
The goal is simple: move promising innovations off the laboratory bench and onto New Zealand farms.
Ministry for Primary Industries Director-General Ray Smith said the focus is now firmly on implementation.
"There's no point developing a whole lot of science and researching it and never applying it on-farm."
A Different Path To Lower Emissions
Agricultural methane accounts for approximately half of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions, making farming central to the country's emissions strategy.
The Government has chosen to pursue technology adoption rather than methane taxation as its preferred pathway.
Last year it scrapped plans for a methane tax, opting instead to work directly with the agricultural sector to encourage uptake of new tools and technologies.
Agriculture Minister Todd McClay said the partnership model offers a practical route to reducing emissions while maintaining farm profitability.
"We don't have to tax farmers to get them to change - we can actually work with them in partnership."
Productivity, Profitability And Market Access
Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis said the programme is designed to strengthen New Zealand agriculture's competitive position as international markets increasingly demand lower-emissions food production.
"New Zealand farmers are already among the world's most emissions-efficient producers."
She said the accelerator would help farmers adopt technologies that support productivity, profitability and long-term competitiveness while reducing emissions.
As export markets evolve, emissions performance is becoming an increasingly important factor for food producers seeking premium market access.

The announcement was made as political leaders gathered at Fieldays, New Zealand's largest agricultural event.
The accelerator fund is expected to support a range of emerging technologies designed to reduce methane emissions from livestock production, helping bring commercially viable solutions to market faster.
Officials believe the most effective driver of adoption will be farmers seeing successful outcomes from other farmers already using the technology.
"Farmers will learn best from the farmer across the fence." Ray Smith said.
A Major Bet On Agricultural Innovation
The combined government investment now exceeds $130 million when previous AgriZeroNZ funding is included.
For the Government, the strategy represents a major bet that innovation can deliver meaningful methane reductions while preserving the productivity and profitability of one of New Zealand's most important industries.
The Early Adoption Accelerator marks the next stage of that effort, shifting the focus from developing technology to deploying it across New Zealand farms at scale.
