Experienced law enforcement leader, former Member of Parliament and respected policy commentator brings decades of public service experience to strengthen the Conservative Party’s policy direction.
Press Release
The Conservative Party has today announced the appointment of Ross Meurant as its Senior Policy Advisor, bringing extensive experience in law enforcement, Parliament, governance, security, and public policy to the party’s leadership team.
Ross has six years of experience as an international diplomatic representative. He brings foreign policy and trade experience to the party.
Ross Meurant’s career has spanned some of New Zealand’s most challenging public policy environments. A former senior officer in the New Zealand Police, former Member of Parliament, and long-time commentator on issues affecting justice, public safety, government accountability, and national direction, Meurant brings a depth of experience rarely seen in modern political circles.
Conservative Leader Welcomes Appointment
Conservative Party Leader Helen Houghton said the appointment reflects the party’s commitment to developing practical, evidence-based policies that address the issues New Zealanders care about.
"Ross brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from decades of service to New Zealand. His understanding of government, Parliament, law enforcement, and the challenges facing communities will be invaluable as we continue developing policies focused on a safer, stronger, and more accountable New Zealand."
Meurant Focused on Practical Solutions
Mr Meurant said he was pleased to join the Conservative Party and contribute his experience to shaping policies that put New Zealanders and the future of the country first.
"New Zealand is facing significant challenges across many areas, including public safety, trust in institutions, government effectiveness, and social cohesion. Sound policy requires experience, careful analysis, and a willingness to address difficult issues honestly. I look forward to working with the Conservative team to develop policies that reflect practical solutions and the expectations of everyday New Zealanders," said Ross.
Building Policy Capability Ahead of Election
The appointment comes as the Conservative Party continues to expand its policy capability ahead of the next general election, with further announcements on candidates and policy initiatives expected in the coming months.
Houghton said:
"Political parties need more than ideas; they need experience, discipline, and the ability to turn principles into workable solutions. Ross’s appointment strengthens our ability to do exactly that."
