Menopause is a normal part of life; you are said to have reached menopause after 12 months in a row of no further periods. The usual age is between 45 to 55 years old. The average in NZ is 52 years old.

About 70% of women have significant symptoms with menopause and 40% will see a doctor because of their symptoms. Symptoms vary hugely in severity with some women having very little discomfort, while others are affected to the extent of being unable to carry out their normal everyday activities such as frequent hot flashes and night sweating for more severe conditions which could happen throughout the night which affect your sleep badly. This is the time where most women started to seek for help.

The most common cases I have heard in my clinic are patients looking for natural remedy like supplements to support the hormones that the body has stopped producing. There are plenty of them in the pharmacies and some might work well for your sisters or girl friends but not necessary work the same for them unfortunately. My advice to everyone is it is very tricky to find the right ready-made herbal remedy that suits everyone, in worst scenario it might worsen the conditions if you have the wrong herbs. Although they are natural herbals but they meant to give therapeutic effects that can affect your body functions, it is always best to consult herbalist first for whatever herbs you want to take.

Another common thing is menopause women having MHT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) covers a range of hormonal treatments that can reduce menopausal symptoms. Despite the controversy about the bad effect of MHT which might cause cancer from long term usage, I would to mention more about my clinical experiences where my patients found MHT worked well but have to keep taking them and some even have been having them for up to 3 years, the problem was all the menopausal symptoms returned once they stopped it. In this case, my patient’s GP refused to prescribe her anymore hormonal pills due the risk of cancer. Therefore, Menopause symptoms can become a long-term problem to some women but if you try acupuncture and Chinese herbal, you will be fine, I can certainly help you with this one.
