The people have spoken!

with Greg Stokes

Mid May was the third attempt (due to Covid restrictions) that the Hot Rods and Horsepower Show at the Indian Hall went ahead and to say it was a success would be an understatement. Hosted by the Pukekohe Hot Rod Club and Napa Auto Parts Dragway, the show boasted an incredible array of diverse vehicles and the public loved it. Saturday also featured a swap meet outside and the numbers through the gate was staggering. People want to make the most of our freedom and the show was a perfect example of getting out and enjoying life.

Show highlights included the showing of Pete Lodge’s famous “Baloo” Fiat from the sixties now owned by Mal Turner displayed near the late Dick Legge “Pie” Ford Pop van. Then there was the incredible land speed car of Dave & Pam Alexander entirely built at home to compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Further in the show was a beautiful display of hot rods, street machines, classics, race cars and also a couple of unfinished projects.

“The crowd was strong on Saturday and steady on Sunday with people coming from all over the North Island”, said president and show organiser Trevor Williams. As always, the professionalism of the club and drag strip shone thru and the result was a well run event showcasing what the Pukekohe Hot Rod Club and Napa Auto Parts Dragway are all about. “The calibre of cars was talked about greatly from the feedback on the day and online, and that’s always good to get considering the effort and money required to host an event like this”, Trevor adds.

Outside was a revolving car show with car enthusiasts from all walks of life bringing their pride and joy out for a drive. There are no trophies for the indoor show other than People’s Choice as voted by the public. It went like this; 4th place Dave Vazey Willys coupe, 3rd place Lyn Poulton ‘34 Ford tudor, 2nd place John Poulton ‘69 Camaro and 1st place Ross Bell ‘33 Ford roadster.

Thanks to all the sponsors who make this event possible, stay tuned for further events in the future.
