This article addresses some of the most profound philosophical and spiritual questions that we ask as we seek to understand our existence. It challenges some popular notions that have derived from the discoveries of Darwin and modern genetics, from the perspective of an interdisciplinary comprehensive scientific understanding.

On June 5 a paper was published by the prestigious journal Cell entitled “Replaying germinal center evolution on a quantified affinity landscape.” It describes how a specific type of stem cell operating in germinal centres (GCs) tackles the process of generating and selecting appropriate antibodies suited to tackle novel pathogens.

According to the paper, germinal centres rapidly generate a large number of antibody types through random hyper-genetic mutation and then monitor the multiplicity of types to “select” those that have the greatest affinity or specific ability to recognise and bind to an invading pathogen.

The study leads the authors to conclude that this natural process is not as efficient as it could be. Germinal centres miss a great many antibodies with high affinity due to limitations of their own genetic make-up. However, because a very large number of mutations are continuously generated, these limitations are bypassed through repeated mutational processes over time, yielding the very high success rate of the immune system in generating appropriate responses to disease.

Through genetic modification the researchers produced around 100 identical B cells operating in the germinal centres of 24 mice. The mice were then injected with a pathogen to stimulate an immune response. The study followed the production of approximately 17,500 antibodies over a 20-day period.

The study found that identically engineered germinal centres did not produce identical antibody sequences. The authors proposed that the process is best described as a Darwinian evolutionary mechanism in which the fittest genetic mutations survive.

Based on their findings, the researchers constructed a quantified model of cellular deep mutational scanning (DMS) which they believe may help develop new antibody medicines and vaccines.

Darwin And The Meaning Of Randomness

The article argues that the conception of randomness used in such studies may be incomplete.

The process of B-cell generation is described as a local process, where cells are regarded as autonomous entities whose internal processes culminate in specific outcomes. This interpretation aligns with traditional Darwinian concepts of evolution through random mutation and selection.

The article notes that evolutionary theory is often interpreted as supporting an atheistic worldview. Charles Darwin himself famously lost his religious faith following his scientific discoveries.

Reference is made to the work of evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, particularly his argument that life emerged from a common ancestor through undirected evolutionary processes.

Dawkins writes:

"Just as the vertebrate skeleton is invariant across all vertebrates... so the DNA code is invariant across all living creatures while the genes themselves vary... which shows more clearly than anything else that all living creatures are descended from a single ancestor."

The article challenges this perspective by arguing that modern physics increasingly points toward a non-local universe.

Genetics And Non-Locality

A key argument presented is that genetics may not operate in the purely local manner often assumed.

The article uses commercial DNA ancestry testing as an example. Individuals often receive ancestry breakdowns containing ethnic contributions that do not appear obvious from either parent.

Rather than demonstrating flaws in testing, the article argues these results illustrate the complex and non-linear nature of genetic expression.

The DNA molecule is described as possessing field-like characteristics in which spatial relationships within the double helix contribute significantly to genetic expression.

According to the article:

"The DNA molecule has non-local field-like properties."

This interpretation challenges the notion that genetic information behaves like a simple linear code.

The Universe Is Non-Local

The article then broadens the discussion beyond biology and into physics.

Drawing on quantum mechanics and theories of non-locality, it argues that reality cannot be fully understood through local interactions alone.

It references the work of physicist Roger Penrose and his discovery of non-repeating crystal structures exhibiting five-fold symmetry. Such structures appear to require information about the whole pattern rather than merely local interactions between neighbouring components.

The article suggests that nature exhibits both specific and holistic values simultaneously.

Using concepts drawn from Vedic Science and the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the article proposes that an omnipresent value of Wholeness underlies evolutionary processes.

Natural Law is described as possessing both:

  • A holistic value
  • A specific value

Just as a jigsaw puzzle requires pieces to fit together locally while simultaneously conforming to a larger image, the article argues that biological evolution may require both local mechanisms and global order.

Consciousness As The Glue Of Life

The discussion then turns toward consciousness.

The article notes that the human body contains approximately 37 trillion cells operating in extraordinary coordination.

It highlights the scale of immune system activity:

  • Approximately 300 billion mature B cells are produced over a lifetime.
  • Individual plasma cells can generate around 2,000 antibodies every second.
  • More than a quadrillion immune-system-related events occur continuously throughout the body.

According to the article, such complexity suggests that consciousness may act as a unifying principle connecting the body's vast cellular networks.

It argues:

"Consciousness is the glue of the body that holds our 37 trillion cells together as an individual, just as universal consciousness is the glue of the universe."

The Hand Of God

The article concludes by arguing that modern developments in genetics, quantum mechanics and consciousness research point toward a fundamentally connected universe.

Rather than viewing life as the product of purely random processes, it proposes that the universe exhibits evidence of an underlying intelligence or wholeness.

Drawing upon both Biblical and Vedic traditions, the article suggests that the interconnectedness observed throughout nature may be understood as evidence of a deeper universal consciousness.

It concludes with a quotation from Psalm 19:

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."

The article's central thesis is that life, consciousness and evolution are not fundamentally random phenomena but expressions of an interconnected reality in which local events remain linked to a larger universal order.
