Supporting our Local Businesses

by Mykeljon Winckel

With the Glorious weather we experienced over Labour weekend, there was certainly plenty of opportunity to discover more about our great local area. The trip out to Port Waikato has long been a favourite and a great ride on the bike or with the family for a day at the beach. This weekend was no different and it was great to see the area bustling with happy families all enjoying the freedoms that our country can enjoy as a result of the measures our government has taken over COVID.

Whilst I was sad to see that Syvia’s has not found a buyer and so remains shut, it was great to meet Liz and Di from the Betty Bean Café who are located at Sunset beach in a purpose-built caravan. Their warm smiles and friendly faces give rise to a plethora of hand baked sweet and savoury goods that can be purchased from Tuesday through Sundays from 8.30am (if you headed out for an early surf) through to 3.30pm for that afternoon sweet treat!

Their being there was like a silver lining. It reminded me that despite the upheaval that this year has bought for many of us, the silver lining has been the amazing support we have all given our local businesses. Long may that continue! Because when you buy, shop and eat local we all benefit.
