In early 2013, a young traveller arrived in Los Angeles with a camera, a blog, and a plan to see the West Coast.
Her name was Elisa Lam.
What followed would become one of the most dissected and unsettling cases of the modern internet era.
The hotel with a history
Lam checked into the Cecil Hotel, a building already known for its troubled past. Located in the city’s Skid Row district, the hotel had long been associated with crime, violence, and transient residents.
Initially placed in a shared room, Lam was later moved to a private room after reports from roommates of unusual behaviour.
The last recording
On the night of January 31, security cameras captured what would become the final known footage of Lam.
Inside the elevator:
- she pressed multiple buttons
- stepped in and out repeatedly
- appeared to hide from something outside the frame
- gestured as if speaking to someone unseen
The elevator doors remained open far longer than normal.
To this day, no one has conclusively explained why.
The disappearance
After that night, Lam vanished.
Her parents, expecting regular contact, raised the alarm when communication stopped. Police searched the building, including the roof, but found nothing.
Days turned into weeks.
Then came the complaints.
Guests began reporting:
- foul-smelling water
- discoloured taps
- strange taste
The discovery no one expected
On February 19, a maintenance worker accessed the rooftop water tanks.
Inside one of them, he found Lam’s body.
The detail that won’t go away
Key elements continue to fuel debate:
- the roof was locked, with alarmed access points
- the tank lids were heavy and not easily opened from inside
- no clear evidence showed how she entered the tank
- toxicology revealed no alcohol or illicit drugs
Authorities ruled the death an accident linked to a mental health episode.
But for many, the sequence of events does not fully align.
The enduring mystery
The footage.
The locked roof.
The unexplained access.
Each detail raises more questions than answers.
The question
How did she get from the elevator to the water tank without anyone knowing?
